Commentary
Tuesday, August 20, 2019

Sunday night I finished a video (beer can vasectomy) and then I prepped the turkey I’ll start slow-roasting at 5.00am tomorrow morning.
By 9.00pm I was entering ‘to do’ notes into my schedules and by 10.0pm I was working on my next blog.

I took a break and sucked on a watermelon popsicle (whole foods) only 40 calories and then I read an article in Boston magazine on restaurants in New England.
Daughter Kat is visiting for several days next week and on Sunday we’re driving up to Ogunquit for a walk-around.
I had read that the White Barn Inn has a new chef and kitchen staff and I will try to get a reservation there.
Wasn’t so great several years ago.
Hoping the new staff will give the place the shot in the arm it needed.

Then I cut all my nails and got the idea for this commentary.
The idea?

That I hate sleep.
I have so many things to do yet but the end of the day is closing fast.

I hate sleep.
I would love to look up tomorrow’s idea for another video.
But my body is going to shut down.
I would love to work on this commentary (and in fact I guess I am.)

But I have to prep my morning coffee and then I will shower.
That’s the killer.
It encourages sleep.
Reminds me, got to get the melatonin on my bedside table as well as my book and reading glasses.

I love to read.
But this time of day, reading is a prelude to sleep.
A very short prelude.

I guess you can’t really hate sleep.
But I do at least resent it.

Chuckle of the day:
Tuesday, August 20, 2019

A couple decided eleven children were enough, so the husband, who had heard of such things, went to a doctor to enquire about a vasectomy.

“Oh it’ll work. But it costs a good deal of money.”
“I have eight dollars,” the man says. “And my cousin has two dollars our uncle gave her.”
“That won’t cover it,” said he doctor. “But there is another way that’ll only cost you a beer.”

“I’ll take it,” says the man.

“Buy a can of beer on the way home. And then buy a cherry bomb.
Guns and fireworks are legal in this state,” he says.
“Drink the beer. Then hold the can up to your ear and count to ten.”

“I don’t see how that is going to help me,” says the patient.
“Trust me,” says the doctor.

So the man goes home, drinks the beer, shoves the cherry bomb into the can, holds it up to his ear, and, using the fingers of his free hand, begins the countdown.

He pauses and looks at his free hand, all the fingers taken.
He looks at the beer can and, placing it between his legs, resumes the countdown.

This from Victor B re: the Simple Solutions video:

See William of Ockham, 1287-1347, for an earlier statement of the same or similar principle.

VB

By which we then asked permission to reprint
To which Victor replied:

Of course. But first google William of Ockham or Ockham's Razor (or is it Rasor?) and get the whole story - in English and Latin.

Web Meister responds: We love those tidbits of info. As to researching Ockham, we went one better by making a likeness of him our lead picture, printing the letter, and publishing our findings as our Thumbnail. Although I did cheat: I did not read it in Latin.

I had a leftover roasted duck.
Funny, it didn’t taste leftover.
Yummy.

William of Ockham (c. 1287 – 1347) was an English Franciscan friar, scholastic philosopher, and theologian, who is believed to have been born in Ockham, a small village in Surrey.

He is considered to be one of the major figures of medieval thought and was at the center of the major intellectual and political controversies of the 14th century.

He is commonly known for Occam's razor, the methodological principle that bears his name, and also produced significant works on logic, physics, and theology.
In the Church of England, his day of commemoration is 10 April.

Occam's razor; or law of parsimony, is the problem-solving principle that states "Entities should not be multiplied without necessity."

The idea is attributed to English Franciscan friar William of Ockham (c. 1287–1347), a scholastic philosopher and theologian.

It is sometimes misquoted in pop culture and other media by some form of the statement "The simplest solution is most likely the right one."
Occam's razor instead says that when presented with competing hypotheses that make the same predictions, one should select the solution with the fewest assumptions, and it is not meant to be a way of choosing between hypotheses that make different predictions.
