COVER: Faith Spotted Eagle
Faith Spotted Eagle was born in 1948 in her ancestral village, White Swan, now submerged beneath Lake Francis Case thanks to the Fort Randall Dam.

She attended the American University in Washington, D.C., and Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota, and holds an MA in Educational Psychology and Counseling from the University of South Dakota. Her time as a student included an internship for then-senator George McGovern.

An American activist and politician, she’s a member of the Yankton Sioux Nation who attempted to block development of the Keystone XL pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Spotted Eagle has been a private consultant in PTSD counseling for veterans, a school counselor and principal, and a Dakota language teacher at Sinte Gleska College.

She is a founding member of the Brave Heart Society, an organization for teaching girls about traditional culture, chair of the Ihanktonwan Treaty Committee, and the manager of Brave Heart Lodge in Lake Andes which seeks to preserve Dakota cultural beliefs for the future. Spotted Eagle served as a delegate of the Treaty Committee NGO at the United Nations.

Spotted Eagle criticized President Donald Trump following his use of the term "Pocahontas" to refer to Senator Elizabeth Warren. She referred to the incident as an "emotional assault" that "carries as much weight as a physical assault," and said, "He can phrase it and twist it and distort it any way he wants, the fact remains: That name does not belong in his mouth."

Spotted Eagle ran for a seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2006 for the 21st district, which comprises Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Jones, and Lyman counties. She placed 3rd in the Democratic Party primary out of three candidates, receiving 735 votes overall. Spotted Eagle won the most votes of any candidate in majority-Native American Buffalo County. She had been convinced to run for the seat but did not actively campaign.

Robert Satiacum Jr., a faithless elector in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, cast his vote for Spotted Eagle. Spotted Eagle said that she was surprised when she learned that she received this vote. She said she hoped the vote would increase awareness of the environmental dangers of the Keystone XL project, and that she was now considering running for state office.

Spotted Eagle ran for one of two seats in District 21 of the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2018, aiming to succeed retiring Democrat Julie Bartling. She lost the Democratic primary, coming in third for total votes behind Brian Jorgensen and Anna Kerner Andersson.

Her resilient commitment to cultural preservation and environmental justice inspires.

Blah Blah Blah Day,
celebrated every April 17, encourages you to listen to those nagging words from your loved ones or friends and take action. It’s a time to start accomplishing what you set as your New Year’s resolution. The term “blah” originated from ancient Greece as “bar bar bar,” referring to the sounds made by barbarians—considered “meaningless noises.” Over time, it evolved into phrases like “yada yada yada” and “blab blab blab.” In 2006, Ruth and Thomas Roy of Wellcat Holidays and Herb launched Blah Blah Blah Day to appreciate casual conversation and encourage people to act on advice. So, stop procrastinating, listen, and turn those “blahs” into meaningful actions!

Commentary

For the last two weeks I’ve been going through an unpleasant, even hurting period. Fortunately, things are looking up.
In the next several days, the effects of my scalding of my hand and wrist will be mostly gone.
My cough has ended.
I think I’ve uncovered the reason my hamstring muscles have been strained and I am responding. We’ll see how that works out.
And the dramatic treatment of the pre-cancerous cells on my face ends today. One of the ugly results of the treatment has been the distortion of my face. Happily, its normal shape has returned. The second effect of the treatment, a blazing redness, like a terrible sunburn, all over my face has peaked and is abating, although it will still take several days to return to a normal color.
And a collateral hurt, serious in its own right, has been my inability to sleep more than one or two hours at night. That has resulted in my eating my main meal of the day, including my attendant alcohol, either a 3oz whiskey like gin and tonic, or two glasses of wine, at 2.00am. After main meal, I get an additional ninety minutes sleep. But during the workday, I don’t have the energy to pour into my lifting. All in all these two weeks have been quite unpleasant.
But, writing this, after five hours of sleep, anticipating my main meal, the Chef’s Sashimi Plate at 11.30am at my favorite Japanese restaurant in Boston, Douzo, I feel okay, even fine.

Health. So important to us. I hope a week from now to have all the injuries and illnesses under control. To wake up eager to face the day.

Be well, my friends. Be thankful when you are well.

Ramps, oh Boy!

Learning about food

Ramp Season

I recently learned that the beginning of April is the start of ramp season. What are ramps, you ask? (As I did, perhaps ignorantly, at the Sunday farmers market.) Ramps are a delicious vegetable that tastes like a leek and onion crossover and that are only in season in April and May.

I would have never known about this beautiful green if not for the overzealous shopper next to me who, unprovoked, launched into a wholesome tirade about how delicious and easy to cook ramps are.

“Just throw them in some olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and you’re good to go!”

“I would add a little bit of minced garlic, too,” quietly added my friend, a true chef who solely came to the market in search of ramps.

I listened to them both, and they were delicious. The entire bowl, which made for less than an appetizer, was $12. A special treat that will likely not be repeated until next ramp season. Yum!

On the Radio: 1950’s Rock n Roll

I was raised on rock n roll. My mother and father are both huge music nuts with enormous collections spanning decades and genres and it’s hard to picture a time in my home growing up that isn’t associated with music of some kind coming out of the radio or more recently a Bluetooth speaker.

I think I grew up with a unique perspective on music in that I fully loved and respected the music my parents were listening to. In fact I felt music from far before I was born did a better job of charting my experience than the pop music of my teenage years. I liked some of it but spend much more of my time listening to older stuff.

I recently watched Ken Burn’s documentary on the birth and growth of country music and I realized I had never seen any kind of project like that about rock music. So in my quiet time over the past month I’ve been working on a project that charts rock music. It’s birth, it’s developments, it’s life in American culture. I turned all my research into what will probably be a series of playlists on Spotify that I’m happy to share here for anyone that might have access. I’m not sure you can listen without a Spotify subscription but if you’re at all curious you can find the first playlist here.
The Birth of Rock n Roll

This playlist begins in the late 1940’s and spans through the 1950’s demonstrating how rock music was born. Artists of the day were taking aspects of other genres and creating a hybrid music style of sorts. R&B gave rock music its expressive and soulful vocals. Country music’s twangy guitar sound and lyrics that told stories made their way into rock n roll. Gospel music was known for intense emotion and vocal harmonies. Rock took it all.
There were hundreds of artists producing music in this decade but you know the icons well. Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Little Richard, Fats Domino and of course Elvis Presley all became American icons who lead the charge in a genre that would continue to push boundaries for years to come.

Beautiful panorama of the traditional medical profession. Notice the doctor in the foreground contemplating his patient, intrigued, trying to scrutinize the pathophysiology to achieve an effective therapy. We also see the sick girl, possibly victim of some of the terrible incurable infectious febrile diseases in the preantibiotic era, pale, weak, asleep. Deep down we see the dismayed mother, worried, hoping for the best. Also notable is the expression of the father, who cannot contain his concern about his daughter's illness, but who has to remain calm to give comfort to the grieving mother.

MONTHLY HEALTH REPORT CARD: of an 82-year-old male for the month of March, 2024

Here’s an unusually unhealthy cocktail.

Illness
The skin cancer I’ve gone in for several treatments of freezing, is stubborn.
I have been prescribed two creams, calcipotriene and fluorouracil. You mix them together and apply them all over your face.
Fortunately, I waited for after my TEDx talk because my face is now substantially discolored with splotches of red. I’m told that’s a good thing. The cancer is being brought to the surface where the crème pair ambushes it.

Illness II
I’ve had a cough that’s been with me for several weeks, although it seems to be abating now.

Accident
During these unpleasant times, while removing a pot of boiling water from the stove, I managed to turn it over onto my hand and wrist. Not fun. Saw the doctor. Second degree burns. Just a waiting game.

Negligence
Not taking care of my body, two months ago I was treated to a severe charley horse. I am still not entirely recovered from that.

Sleep
My sleep habits over the last couple of weeks have taken a turn for the worse.

All in all, not in the best of health.

But I'm not feeling as morbid as this is all sounding. Emotionally, I’m fine. The attention I’ve received stemming from the TEDx talk of a couple of weeks ago has been strongly positive. Depression is not in my vocabulary.

“Autonomy is in part to be reconciled to life, love and death”

Arnold Siegel On Autonomy

My understanding about love is that at least in part is to be friends with in an intelligent way with what’s so with a little wit.

I have as you know an abnormal brain.   Three to five percent or three percent of   people have a similar brain I have.  I talked to Doctor Roth about my brain and he said for forty years we have done every test including brain scans; there is no doubt that abbey normal brains exist.  I have been diagnosed with this kind of brain in may ways including several brain scans.

One morning I woke up with no mourning.  When I got up to the mental anguish that my abnormal brain generates for me.  There is 44,000 people on a average in America who take their life in order to escape this pain.  This morning, I intended to make friends with my abnormal brain.  I even gave my abnormal brain a new name, Abbey Normal.   I even greet my abnormal brain Abbey Normal every morning.  I say good morning Abbey are you going to generate mental anguish for me.   Oh! , Yes I am.”   “That’s great.  You are doing a great job, Abbey.  To honor the pain you give me I am going to use that pain as the fodder to be a bigger person and make a bigger difference.

“Oh! Saids Abbey I Love You.”

“I love you too Abbey.”

Dedicated to those whose love and support empowered me to create this transformation.

Happy Easter
