The article below marked “Food” was begun on ChatGPT with the posed question : name ten foods noted for their umami flavor.
From there, I went to Wikipedia and looked up ‘umami’.
From there, I returned to ChatGPT and asked it when was umami recognized as a distinct taste.
In between the most productive questions and answers were several other questions the responses to which I did not use.
To these recapitulations, Wiki and ChatGPT being Readers’ Digest summaries of their own research, I added my knowledge of the subject and a clear goal of what I wanted to achieve in the article, and produced a fact-based thumbnail sketch designed to make 95% of my readers comfortable using the term, umami.

Thrifting and Reading

One of my favorite and least productive hobbies is…

One of my favorite and least productive hobbies is thrifting. I love the treasure hunting aspect of sifting through racks of clothes and shoes in hopes of finding a semi-designer piece at a Goodwill price. I volunteered at a local thrift store last year and got very good at recognizing quality quickly. For the sake of my wallet, I stopped volunteering there after 8 months, although I still snoop around every once in a while. Last week, I found these beauties, in my size, zero wear, for $20. One of my better finds, and I wanted to show it off. I think my cousin Lisa would be proud.

Favorite Films of 2022 Part 7 (finale)

This final smattering of films from 2022 are actually my favorites from last year. I love each of these films in equal measure even though they are all very different pieces of art. To me they’re products of filmmakers working the heights of their powers to evoke real thrills and emotions. These four films, to me, are what movies are all about.
You can read short reviews of each of these films here

The scent of fear

My last day in Argentina was an eventful one!

In the morning I fished the Caleufu spring creek which was designed 20 years ago by my fishing guide named Javier Rivara. It was very cool to hear how he designs his creeks which combines architecture, construction, and etymology. He’s created spring creeks in Argentina, Colorado, California, NY, and Texas so it was a real treat spending time with him. He also has a high bar when it comes to fishing these small creeks. He had me cast standing 10 feet from creek’s edge so that the fishing line landed on the grass, while the clear fishing leader and the fly land in the water. This is to keep the fish from seeing me or the fishing line, so they don’t get spooked. It took some practice, but it paid off with some very nice fish. The last hour of our session was incredibly productive and exciting.

After a nice lunch and some down time to rest, we fished Chulchuma mountain creek which required a 45-minute drive with a significant elevation increase. The creek flows around massive boulders which create small, deep pockets where big fish are very happy to live. Fishing these little pockets is exciting as you only get a few casts in each pocket before the fish decides to strike or pass. We caught some beauties. With just an hour left in the evening session, Javier positioned me in the water at one of his favorite spots. Just as I started to cast, I noticed that the water level was rising fast, and the river started to get very loud. We looked up stream and saw a scary amount of muddy water headed our way. We scrambled out of the creek in somewhat of a panic and turned around to see a huge increase in water flowing past us. A few hours earlier in the day there were significant thunder storms many miles upstream, and it looks like we were in the water as it came rumbling down. We were lucky to get out of the water in time but unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of the river from the truck which had our water, cell phones, satellite communicator, etc. The water was now three feet higher than when we scrambled out. We ended up hiking (in wading boots!) 2.5 miles down river through tough mountain terrain until our only options were to climb 500 yards up to be able to keep walking downstream toward the ranch, or to cross the river to get to the road. We found a fishing spot nearby that Javier knew well. We left the rod and reel and other gear on the side of the river, locked arms and very, very slowly made our way across the river making sure that only one of our four feet was moving at any one time. It took about 10 minutes to get across the river and then we slowly worked our way up stream to find a space to scramble up the bank and get to the road. We hiked the 2.5 miles back up the creek to the truck and then drove back to the ranch in the dark. It was about 3 hours from the flood until we got back to the ranch, but it sure felt like a lot longer. Phew! I took the sunset photo when we got out of the river and were safely back on the road. Even with miles still to hike, it was a real relief to look at that sky and know we were likely all good.

Social Life
My social life is as quiet as it’s ever been. I’m sure it will turn around (I work at it) but meanwhile I am using my extra time well. I continue to organize my notes and my apartment, I continue to develop this ezine, and I’m spending more time on shopping, cooking, and enjoying meals while watching mostly Korean dramas.

“Train to Busan” is a terrific zombie movie out of South Korea. I watched it for five minutes and, not being a zombie fan, turned it off. I reported my reaction to my son Dom and he wrote this back:

Dad,

I totally understand your reaction to the opening of

“Train to Busan”; if the opening was upsetting, you did the right thing in turning it off! While the movie hits on many of the tropes of the genre, it does so with an energy and originality that really makes it feel like something new.  The relationship between the father and daughter is wonderfully done, and some of the visuals are jawdropping-the ways in which walls of zombies are used and filmed are horrible and gorgeous at the same time.  If you can somehow distance yourself from the gore, viewing it as a movie trick and not actual violence, these movies become a lot of fun.  Most movies in this genre are garbage, so when a good one comes along, the gore becomes part of the language of the movie, part of the artistic expression of the creators, and this movie is a good example of it.

Blog meister responds: Gotcha. Well-spoke. Thank you, my dear.

The first five minutes clocked me out of watching. But a well-received entry in the horror genre.

Short Essay

The competition among tech giants for AI technology is intense and constantly evolving. Companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook are investing heavily in AI research, development, and implementation, hoping to gain a competitive edge in the market. They are developing advanced algorithms and tools, acquiring startups, and hiring top talent in the field. The race for dominance in AI technology has major implications for a wide range of industries, including healthcare, finance, transportation, and more. These companies understand the potential of AI to revolutionize the way we live and work, and they are fiercely competing to be at the forefront of this transformation.

People
